On the brick and wood-sided homes across Blue Hills, Santa Fe, Waldo, and Independence Avenue, the walls are often fine and the rot is in the painted trim: fascia behind the gutters, soffits, window and door casings, and the bottom boards that sit close to the ground. We replace those pieces with rot-resistant trim or wrap them in aluminum, fix the gutter that caused it, and leave the siding alone. Some of those homes still have original asbestos-cement shingle siding; it is safe left in place, there are rules for removing it, and we will talk through repairing or covering it before anyone suggests tearing it off.
